Everywhere I hike in the summer, this gorgeous flower appears. This one was inspired from a hike up Mt. Antero. So many varieties can be found from wider, darker purples to feathery, light purple. Its name comes from an old belief that it helped keep away fleas.

blue columbine
Aquilegia coerulea
On many hikes, I’ve found columbine plants thriving everywhere from the lower elevation shelter of aspens to the high alpine tundra. They vary in shades and colors, white and pink found many times, too. This is Colorado’s state flower and can even change color depending on which pollinators visit it.
